Lover of badge making

This blog is for:

  • other artists, facilitators and companies who are interested in working in community-centred ways,

  • future audiences who are interested in knowing how we’ve developed Second Nature,

  • and for posterity - capturing this moment in time!

This blog marks the end of this community engagement phase of Second Nature. One of our aims at Mind Out is to be transparent about which parts of projects we are co-creating more than others. In this phase, we were co-creating and finding ways to work with different groups in a way that was most exciting to them, rather than imposing particular aspects of Second Nature.

Hearing and discussing the reality of being a Disabled person in this near-now dystopian world - the level of generosity and honesty from the participants that will deeply inform the world-building. Some of the movement exploration was really fun!

Collaborating for the first time with GrowNotts - thanks, Jack Harris! Exciting for the general public to have an experience that combined GrowNott’s expertise in gardening/re-wilding/nature education with Mind Out’s creativity and storytelling experience. This was the first conversation on how our two organisations could collaborate, and how our target audiences are the same, but the outputs are different.

Every single young person ran in their own creative direction, and there was a lot of excitement about this kind of story. This meant there were a lot of helpful conversations that could be passed on to the writer, whilst there were also lots of creative activities for them to get involved in.

One young person wrote a monologue as another survivor in this world, they then improvised around it and filmed it, which will hopefully be shown in September as part of the sharing with The Broadway. We also did badge making and stop motion!

Extra Wins!

Organisational development win: We were asked to become a One Vision partner organisation as a result of working with Bulwell Forest Gardens - exciting collabs ahead!

Sustainability win: We were good at reusing materials and not buying anything new (apart from the badge maker - but this will get MUCH USE - just by Evie, stationery nerd, alone!)

In summary, we have found that giving time, resources and decision-making power to a wide range of people with different lived experiences to explore the world of the play on their own terms has made for a more interesting and nuanced storyline to emerge! Thank you to everyone who took part - for your generosity and passion!

The writer, Emma Zadow, now heads into their writing zone! We can't way to bring you more news on Second Nature soon...
